A Guide to Necklace Chain Lengths

The right necklace can pull an outfit together, but it can be tricky to decide which chain length to choose. Getting the right chain length can make a big difference when you want to make a statement or need a piece of jewellery for a specific outfit or occasion.

Kirsten Manzi Jewellery necklaces are available in four different chain lengths depending on the style. I've put together a guide to give you an idea of where each chain length is likely to sit and help you chose the necklace length that's best for you.

16” Chain / Approx 40cm

A 16" chain will sit close against the base of the neck, just below or on the collar bone. This length works well with off the shoulder, crew cut and boat neckline and looks lovely peeking through an open collar shirt or V neck top. If you have a larger frame this length may be tight and form-fitting.

18” Chain / Approx. 45cm

18" chains are the most commonly worn length and will suit most styles and situations. It's a great go-to length for everyday necklaces that you'll wear with lots of different outfits. 18" chains fall on the chest a few inches below the collar bone. Generally 18" chains above the neckline on lower cut clothing, but work just as well layered over crew-neck T-shirts and high turtleneck styles.

20” Chain / Approx 50cm

A 20" chain falls on the chest, at the top of the bust a few inches above the sternum. This length goes well with high necklines and collared shirts and can make a statement when worn with a low plunging neckline. If you are tall or have a larger build, this length might be a more comfortable go-to length for everyday necklaces. It's also the most common length chosen by men.

24 “ Chain / Approx 60 cm

A 24" chain falls on the bust or sternum. It works well with most high necklines, and like the 20" chain, looks beautiful with open shirts and V neck clothing too. This length looks best with slightly thicker chain styles and long pendants.

We all come in different shapes and sizes, so where a necklace sits will vary slightly from person to person, depending on your body shape and height. In general, 16" & 18" chains will be comfortable for those with a petite build and 20" or 24" more comfortable for those with a larger frame. Always go with what works best for you and your style. If you have any questions or need a chain length adjusted, let me know.

If you’re still unsure, you can also measure a necklace you already have with a tape measure, or you can use some string, ribbon, or a soft measuring tape draped around your neck to figure out what will work best for you and the outfit you want to wear.
