Stockist Spotlight: Dundee Contemporary Arts
Dundee Contemporary Arts
Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) is a world-class visual arts centre with a focus on contemporary art and culture. The DCA building was opened in 1999 following a major refurbishment of the semi-derelict Macleans garage (have a look here) by architect Richard Murphy. The building was instantly hailed as an innovative modern space and has since become a social and cultural hub within Dundee's city centre. Just a short walk from the railway station, the distinctive contemporary building hosts a restaurant, cinema art gallery, print studio and gallery gift shop, all under one roof!
Shopping at the DCA was recently hailed as " an essential part of any visit to Dundee. " by American Vogue. The gift shop, based on Level 4 is where you can find a selection of handmade silver pieces from my Balance range. The DCA shop stocks a unique selection of work from local established, up and coming and international artists and designers. You can find homeware, contemporary jewellery books, art and design magazines, stationery as well as a wide selection of limited edition prints produced by Scottish and international artists in the DCA's highly acclaimed print studio.
On the same floor as the shop, you'll find the DCA's large gallery spaces. The exhibition programme features top UK names such as Turner prize winner Mark Wallinger as well as internationally renowned artists, alongside emerging artists getting their first big show. The current exhibition "what a site. what a sound. what a universal shudder." is the first major European exhibition of American artist Eve Fowler's work. As well as these large galleries, DCA is also home to the Visual Reseach Centre which is part of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. Exhibitions marrying science and visual art, as well as research outcomes are often showcased in the VRC studio/gallery.
Downstairs on Level 3, you'll find the Jute Cafe Bar - a great place to relax and grab a drink or a bite to eat, the cinema - showing a variety of world, arthouse, political and blockbuster films and the print studio where you can try your hand at a variety of creative classes from screen printing to 3D printing.
